If it weren’t for its extremely high dosage of item grinding, I would have put EVE at #1 on this list. Yeah, Eve Online has a lot of wandering around aimlessly through space. Fortunately for me, I find that enchanting so I really love Eve Online. It’s famous for it’s giant space battles that destroy entire legions of ships that cannot be recovered (Eve has a variation of permadeath in it). Who knows, you might find yourself caught in the middle of an epic war so there’s always that to look forward to. If you love to grind for loot and possibly get embroiled in a galaxy wide space feud, Eve Online is the right game for you.

No wonder the developers even included the terraforming technology that allows you to change the biomes from cold to hot and vice versa. Another cool thing about Dark and Light is that the day and night in the game change in real-time, as synchronized with your world clock – hence the title of the game. The characters will starve and get cold, so the survival component is very strong here.
This is typically referred to as a freemium model with some players getting a “premium” version of the free product. It’s a formula that still works today, but is one that creates some anxiety as people (including us) worry about pay to win freemium content. Eventually, makers of big budget titles saw how successful MMOs with a free play option could be. Free MMOs started to release with unique features and modern capabilities instead of the copycat, rehashed game design that the subgenre was initially known for. They also began to toy with free to play monetization models.
